WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball team earned its first win in program history, topping Gannon University in game one of a doubleheader Wednesday at the RussMatt Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla.
The Wolverines scored seven runs in the sixth inning to take control in a 10-3 victory. The Knights earned a split with a 10-2 win in the finale. The Wolverines move to 1-14 on the season with two games remaining in Florida.
UM-Dearborn jumped out to an early lead in the opener, with Daniel Kerr (JR/Macomb, MI) driving home Andrew Capone (FR/Warren, MI) with an RBI single in the first. Ryan Beadle (SO/Kalamazoo, MI) added an RBI sacrifice fly later in the inning. Gannon scored three unanswered to take a 3-2 lead after four innings.
The Wolverines tied the game on a Waymond Lemons RBI in the fifth before taking control of the game in the sixth. The inning started with a second RBI for Kerr, followed by a three-run, bases-clearing double from Beadle. Antonio Carta (SO/Allen Park, MI) added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run single.
Freshman Dan Bos (FR/Livonia, MI) got the win for the Wolverines, pitching six innings, allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out three and walking seven.
Capone finished with three hits including a double, while Leija, Carta, Beadle and Cole VanWagoner(SO/Mancelona, MI) each finished with two hits.
Gannon topped the Wolverines 10-2 in the finale. Details to come when statistics are available.
The Wolverines have an off day on Thursday and conclude their trip to Florida against Warner University with a doubleheader at 1 pm on Friday.
