Freshman blue liner Ethan Marcola got the scoring started for the Wolverines as the defensive scored his first goal in the Maize & Blue. Craig McKague and A.J. Benit provided assists on the opening goal. The Cougars tied the game up three minutes later on a shorthanded goal. At the 10:42 mark, the Cougars went a man down after a slashing minor. The Wolverine's powerplay unit scored less than a minute into the powerplay off the stick of Joey Cullinan. The goal was Cullinan's first of the night. Less than a minute later, Declan Flanagan scored his first goal after burying the open chance off a Quest Bigelow assist. The Wolverines weren't finished, as Bailey Byrd scored the fourth goal at the 14:03 mark. The Wolverine offensive onslaught ended in the Cougars making a change in net before the period ended.

Leading 4-2 going into the second period, the Wolverines would add five more goals to the scoresheet, scoring twice on the powerplay. Once from Flanagan and another from Cullinan. Brendan West, Ryan Teets, and Byrd all scored in the period.
