DEARBORN, Mich. -The University of Michigan-Dearborn athletics department is excited to announce the hiring of Vince Alessandrini as the new head coach of the Wolverine softball program, effective immediately.
"We are excited to welcome Vince Alessandrini to UM-Dearborn and look forward to his leadership with the softball program," UM-Dearborn Director of Athletics & Recreation Matt Beaudry said. "Vince's experience along with passion for teaching and coaching have us excited to watch him guide our program into the future. Vince is committed to helping student-athletes succeed and develop, while elevating the program through academic excellence, community service and success on the field."
Alessandrini takes over as the third coach in the 10-year history of the program. The Macomb Township, Mich., native most recently helmed the softball program at Macomb Community College. He guided the Monarchs to league and district titles in 2015, while being named District Coach of the Year. The 2015 MCC team also competed at the NJCAA National Championship.
Prior to taking over at MCC, Alessandrini coached the varsity program at Eisenhower High School. For nearly the last decade, Alessandrini has been an instructor with Extra Innings and a coach with the Michigan Batbusters travel team, which won the 12U World Series Championship and the 2014 16U National Championship.
Alessandrini has additional coaching experience in football and baseball, including an assistant position with MCC baseball in 1992.
The UM-Dearborn softball team returns several key pieces from a team that tied a school record with 31 wins in 2016. The Wolverines are set up for a strong year in 2017 led by an experienced core group, including All-WHAC First Team honorees Taylor Moceri (SR/Sterling Heights, MI) and Ellie Kauten (JR/Shelby Township, MI).
"I am really excited to be a part of UM-Dearborn softball," Alessandrini said. "This is a very talented group and I am ready to get started. Coming from Macomb (Community College), I have played against UM-Dearborn plenty of times. The talent is here and ready to make a run this season."
