Wolverines close trip with second win over No. 2 SXU

CLERMONT, Fla. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team concluded its spring break trip to Florida with a dramatic win over No. 2 Saint Xavier University Saturday morning.

The Wolverines trailed 3-1 heading to the sixth inning before UM-Dearborn loaded the bases setting the stage for Jordan Ewald (JR/Wixom, MI), who blasted her first home run of the season for a game-winning grand slam. The win was the second in two days for the Wolverines over the second-ranked Cougars and moves UM-Dearborn to 11-4 overall as the team heads home.

The Wolverines took an early lead when Kassidy Butler (SO/Parchment, MI) came up with an RBI single to score Rachel Clem (SO/Stevensville, MI) in the third inning. SXU came back and took its first lead in two games against the Wolverines with three in the fourth, setting up Ewald to come through in the sixth.

Alexandra Elwell (SR/Kalamazoo, MI) started for the Wolverines, allowing three runs on six hits before giving up the mound to Gina Verduzco (JR/Portage, MI), who threw the final three innings. Verduzco did not allow a hit and walked just one, while striking out six batters and picking up the win (4-1).

The Wolverines finished with four hits, including two from Ewald, while the team did not commit an error.

UM-Dearborn plays its final tune ups for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference schedule with a pair of doubleheaders in Indiana next weekend. The Wolverines first travel to Indiana Wesleyan University for a pair starting at 4 p.m. Friday in Marion, Ind.
