UM-Dearborn streak reaches 9 with sweep of Cornerstone

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team continued its winning ways with a sweep of Cornerstone University in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Wolverines pulled away late in game one and scored three in the sixth inning of the finale, winning both games by a final score of 5-1. The sweep pushes UM-Dearborn's win streak to nine games, all in WHAC play. The Wolverines are 20-6-1 overall and 9-2-1 in the WHAC.

Kylie Hill (SR/Adrian, MI) got the scoring started with an RBI single in the first inning of game one. After Cornerstone tied the game in the second, UM-Dearborn got RBIs from Taylor Moceri (SR/Sterling Heights, MI) and Kassidy Butler (SO/Parchment, MI) in the bottom of the frame. Rachel Clem (SO/Stevensville, MI) and Hill each added RBIs to extend the Wolverine lead late. Jordan Ewald (JR/Wixom, MI) led UM-Dearborn with three hits, while Moceri, Butler and Hill each added two.

Alexandra Elwell (SR/Kalamazoo, MI) (6-1) got the win for the Wolverines, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing one run on seven hits and striking out two. Gina Verduzco (JR/Portage, MI) picked up the save (4) with three strikeouts.

Cornerstone took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game two, but Butler tied the score with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. The Wolverines went ahead with a run on a double-play ball. The score remained 2-1 in favor of UM-Dearborn until the sixth when Clem and Riley Hison (SO/Macomb Township, MI) added RBIs. Butler and Sarah Prashad (SO/Mississauga, Ontario) each led the Wolverines with two hits.

Samantha Torongeau (FR/Shelby Township, MI) (3-1) was strong on the mound for the Wolverines, pitching the complete game, allowing one run on seven hits, while striking out two.

The Wolverines continue a busy week with the final home doubleheader of the season on Senior Day against Lourdes University at 2 p.m. Friday at Alumni Field in Ann Arbor.
