Moceri, Verduzco sweep WHAC weekly awards

DEARBORN, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team opened the 2017 season with a 15-game schedule last week in Florida, as the Wolverines picked up 11 wins in Clermont.

There were several standout performances for UM-Dearborn, but two stood out, with senior Taylor Moceri (SR/Sterling Heights, MI) leading the way at the plate and in the field, while junior Gina Verduzco (JR/Portage, MI) was dominant on the mound. For their efforts, the duo swept the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference weekly awards, as Moceri was named WHAC Player of the Week, while Verduzco earned Pitcher of the Week honors.

Moceri did everything for the Wolverines, playing three positions in the field, making an impact at each spot and taking runs away from the other teams. From the lead-off position, Moceri compiled a .435 batting average, coming away with 20 total hits, including the first three home runs of her career. She also recorded a team-high 16 RBIs and 12 runs scored, while adding four doubles and a triple. Moceri's .761 slugging percentage also leads the team.

Verduzco opened the 2017 season with a strong week in Florida, posting a 4-1 record and two saves. Against the No. 2 team in the NAIA, Saint Xavier University, Verduzco won both games. She tossed a complete game in the first contest against the Cougars, allowing one run on four hits and striking out five. She came in during the fifth inning of the second contest and struck out six of the 10 batters she faced, while not allowing a hit. In eight appearances, she pitched 32.2 innings with an ERA of 2.14. She struck out 27 batters and had two complete games. Verduzco added nine hits, including a home run and eight RBIs at the plate for the Wolverines.

UM-Dearborn continues to tune up for the WHAC season, taking on Indiana Wesleyan University at 4 p.m. Friday in Marian, Ind.
