RIVERVIEW, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's soccer team opened the 2018 season with a hard-earned win over Georgetown College Saturday at Gabriel Richard High School in Riverview, Mich.
Down 1-0 early, the Wolverines scored two goals off set pieces to take the lead and despite a lightning delay of more than an hour, UM-Dearborn held on for a 2-1 victory to start the seventh season in program history with a win.
The Wolverines controlled the pace of play from the start, but Georgetown got the scoring started early with a goal in the ninth minute from Nick Gregory.
UM-Dearborn answered quickly with a tally off a corner kick in the 12th minute. After the cross cleared the first wave of attackers, freshman Jack Barnett got a foot to it for the Wolverines, playing it back to the foot of Luke Baker, who calmly deposited the ball in the back of the net.
The score remained tied through halftime. Shortly after the break, Joseph Georgic ripped a strike past the Tiger goalkeeper from 20-yards out to put UM-Dearborn on top.
The game was halted for more than an hour after lightning was spotted in the area with 13:56 left on the clock. Georgetown made several pushes forward, looking for the tying goal, but UM-Dearborn's defense stood tall in front of freshman goalkeeper Alex Siluk, who picked up the win in his first career start, making one save.
The Wolverines outshot the Tigers 16-6 while taking six corner kicks to three from Georgetown.
UM-Dearborn takes on Olivet College in an exhibition at 4 pm Saturday, August 25 in Olivet, Mich.
