Wolverines earn WHAC bid with 1-0 win

RIVERVIEW, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's soccer team earned a bid to the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament with a win over Concordia University in a makeup game Tuesday at Gabriel Richard High School in Riverview, Mich.

The Wolverines and Cardinals battled through a tightly-contested scoreless game until UM-Dearborn found the game-winning goal in the 51st minute and held off Concordia the rest of the way to take the 1-0 win.

With the win, UM-Dearborn moves to 6-9-2 overall and 3-7-1 in the WHAC. The Wolverines will be the No. 8 seed in the WHAC Postseason Tournament and will travel to No. 1 seeded Madonna University at 2 pm Saturday in Livonia, Mich.

The six wins this season ties the program record for victories set in 2013, which was the last time UM-Dearborn earned a spot in the WHAC Postseason Tournament. Six wins this season sets a new-personal high for the Wolverines under fifth-year head coach Matt Quirk.

The game winning goal came off the foot of freshman Jack Barnett on a brilliant strike into the top corner from just outside the box on an assist from sophomore Chad Schmerheim. The goal is the third of the season for Barnett, giving him the team lead.

Alex Siluk entered the game in the second half in net for the Wolverines and got the win without seeing a shot on goal. The Wolverines outshot the Cardinals 13-4 putting up 12 shots in the second half.

NOTE: The game was a makeup from Oct. 6, which was postponed due to inclement weather.
