RIVERVIEW, Mich. – It was a historic afternoon for the University of Michigan-Dearborn women's soccer team Saturday at Gabriel Richard High School in Riverview, Mich.
The Wolverines hosted Lourdes University in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener, earning the first win in UM-Dearborn program history. Junior Jenna Rogers found the game-winning goal with under 10 minutes to play. The Wolverines held on and earned the 2-1 victory to move to 1-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the WHAC.
After the team battled to a scoreless first half, the Wolverines got the scoring started shortly after the break. Freshman Margaret Miller took a corner kick and swung it into the net off a Lourdes player that was inside the goal line. The goal was the first career tally for Miller and put UM-Dearborn up 1-0.
The Gray Wolves worked to find an equalizer and got it, as a Lourdes corner kick bounced around the six-yard box and was put in the net by Karlie O'Keefe in the 70th minute to even the score at 1-1.
The game-winning goal was set up by a near 50-yard run down the sideline by sophomore Nicole Losek. She crossed the ball to Rogers, who netted her third goal of the season to give the Wolverines the historic win.
Rogers finished with a team-high four shots, while Losek added two. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Anheuser earned her first career win, making six saves for the Wolverines.
UM-Dearborn continues WHAC play against Lawrence Tech at 7 pm Wednesday in Southfield, Mich.
