Wolverines split two at THE Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team split a pair of games on Sunday as the team continued its trip at THE Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.

The Wolverines rallied against Thomas More University, but fell short 8-7 to open the day. UM-Dearborn rebounded to snap a four-game skid with an 8-1 win over St. Ambrose University to move to 9-12 overall this season.

Against TMU, the Wolverines led 3-0 early, but the Saints took control, leading 8-5 heading the sixth. Kayla Laquiere and Makenna Millhorn each drove in a run in the sixth to cut the TMU lead to one, but the Saints closed the door in the seventh.

Laquiere led the Wolverine offense with four hits and two runs scored, while Madeline Skene, Amber Cheplick, Melissa Charbonneau, Megan Lohner and Amy Jarrett all added two hits. Ashylnn Henderson took the loss on the mound, allowing eight runs on 12 hits, while walking five and striking out six.

In the win over SAU, the Wolverines trailed in the first 1-0, but Millhorn hit a solo home run to tie it in the bottom of the inning. Charbonneau, Caitlyn Mauser and Jarrett all added RBIs in the second, while Marisa Vermiglio and Cheplick each drove in a run in the third. Laquiere continued her strong day with a two-run double in the fourth to put the game out of reach for the Wolverines.

Erin McCune (4-4) tossed a complete game, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out two in the win over the Fighting Bees.

The Wolverines continue play in Florida with two more on Monday. UM-Dearborn opens the day against William Penn University at 3:45 pm, followed by a matchup with Carlow University at 6 pm.
