Softball opens Florida trip with split

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team opened its annual Spring Break Trip, splitting a pair of contests at THE Spring Games on Saturday in Kissimmee, Fla.

The Wolverines fell in the opener to Spring Arbor University 3-1, while Erin McCune pitched an outstanding game in the finale to lead UM-Dearborn to a 4-0 win over Trinity International University. The split moves UM-Dearborn to 3-5 overall on the season.

Against SAU, the Wolverines trailed by three heading to the bottom of the sixth. Kayla Laquiere came through with an RBI double to get UM-Dearborn on the board, but the rally was stifled. Makenna Millhorn finished with two hits, while Gina Liss added a double.

Ashlynn Henderson got the start on the mound for UM-Dearborn and was charged with the loss. She tossed five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, while walking one and striking out five.

In the finale, the Wolverine offense was kept quiet until Madelin Skene came through with a three-run home run to put UM-Dearborn up 3-0 in the sixth. Amy Jarrett added an RBI in the seventh.

McCune was nearly untouchable on the mound, throwing a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits, while striking out three and finishing with no walks.

The Wolverines continue play in Florida with two more on Sunday. UM-Dearborn opens day two against St. Thomas University at 11:30 am, followed by a matchup with Florida National University at 2 pm in Kissimmee, Fla.
