ANN ARBOR, MI – The University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball team (2-2; 2-2) split a pair one-run games against the University of Northwestern Ohio (10-12; 3-3) to earn their first conference win against the Racers in program history.
John Dyda got the start on the mound in game one. After allowing a run in the first, he and the Wolverines defense worked their way out of multiple threats from the Racers to keep the score 1-0 through six innings. Dan Bos pitched a scoreless 7th inning before the Wolverines were able to get on the board with a 2-run single from Evan Morin to go up 2-1. Morin's three hits and Shane Fugate's two hits paced the offense. UNOH scored a run in the 8th and a run in the 9th to secure a 3-2 game one win. Jack Hook took the loss on the mound.
The Wolverines bounced back in a wild game two that ended with an Antonio Carta 2-run walk-off homerun to seal a 10-9 victory and doubleheader split. Andrew Capone's 2-run triple and Shane Fugate's 3-run homerun helped the Maize and Blue jump out to an 8-1 lead through seven innings. The Racers answered with eight runs in the 8th inning to take a 9-8 lead. After Shaun Hannibal singled with one out in the 9th inning, Carta's blast over the left field wall clinched the win. Tyler Koons started the game on the mound and went 7.1 strong innings. Tyler Troyer (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the win. Capone and Max McLennan each had multi-hit games.
The Maize and Blue will be back on the field Tuesday for a conference doubleheader at Cornerstone University.
