FORT WAYNE, IN - The University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball team (1-1; 1-1) opened the 2021 spring season with a 10-3 win against WHAC foe Indiana Tech (9-13; 1-1) before dropping game two of the doubleheader 12-2 in eight innings. The games were the first for the Wolverines since March 7, 2020.
John Dyda (1-0) tossed six scoreless innings in game one, allowing only three hits while striking out three and not issuing any walks. Jack Hook pitched the final three innings to preserve the win and earn his first save of the season.
The offense, paced by the top three hitters in their lineup, used 14 hits and eight walks to score the first 10 runs of the game. Andrew Capone had two hits, four runs, and two stolen bases in the leadoff spot; Shaun Hannibal added three hits batting second in the lineup; Antonio Carta had two doubles, a home run and a team-high three RBIs from the three-hole.
In game two, the Warriors jumped out early and took advantage of five Wolverine errors and six walks while collecting 15 hits in the nightcap to even the series. Hannibal and Shane Fugate each collected two hits for the Wolverines. Tyler Koons (0-1) took the loss on the mound.
The Wolverines continue WHAC play next weekend with doubleheaders on Friday at Cornerstone University and Sunday at Aquinas College.
