Wolverines Handle Golden Eagles in Straight Sets on Senior Day, Clinches 5th Seed at WHAC Tournament

DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn (14-15, 10-10) volleyball team played a strange contest on Saturday (Nov. 4) as they trailed by significant margins in each of the first two sets against the Cornerstone Golden Eagles (14-16, 9-11). But the Wolverines persevered and rallied behind the eight seniors they were honoring and defeated the Golden Eagles in straight sets to end a losing streak of 26 consecutive games against Cornerstone.

The Golden Eagles led the Wolverines 7-0 in the first set and 5-1 in the second. However, they lost each of those sets. The Wolverines had a sense of calmness about them. Something that has occurred recently as the Wolverines ended the season on a four-game winning streak after previously losing six of their last seven. The Wolverines continued to feed their outside hitters as Kielee Tondryk and Sydney Eggleton each saw 30+ attacks again. The duo each tallied 10 kills, while Brooke Wetherill chipped in nine on just 15 swings.

Kenzie Mertz led the Wolverines with 19 digs in just three sets and tallied three aces while not conceding a reception error. Regan Rose tallied 36 assists and four kills as she was dynamite at the net all afternoon. The Wolverines tallied 13 blocks but continuously disrupted a strong Golden Eagle attack.

The Wolverines secured the fifth seed with the win and will travel to Livonia to take on Madonna in the opening round of the WHAC Tournament. Times are TBA.
