Late push falls short for UM-Dearborn at Cornerstone

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn volleyball team rallied to force extra points in the third after Cornerstone University easily took the first two sets. The Golden Eagles held off the Wolverines to take the match in three sets in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contest Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Wolverines dropped 15 of the final 16 points in the first set and the first seven of the second before finding their footing. UM-Dearborn had a set point at 24-23 in the third, but Cornerstone rallied to take the final three points of the match. The line score was 25-4, 25-15, 26-24 and drops the Wolverines to 8-10 overall and 1-6 in the WHAC.

Shayla Smalls (SO/Canton, MI) led the UM-Dearborn attack with seven kills to go along with two service aces. Colby DeMare (SR/Dearborn MI), Briann Alspaugh (JR/St. Louis MI) and Katherine Nealy (SO/Southfield, MI) each had five kills, while Raechel Warchock (SR/Jackson, MI), who moved to the Libero position, had a team-high 10 digs. The Wolverine offense was orchestrated by Daniella Barile (FR/Plymouth MI) with 17 assists.

The Wolverines got their block going at tiimes during the match with DeMare and Alspaugh each posting four block assists.

UM-Dearborn continues WHAC competition against Aquinas College at 3 p.m. Sunday in Grand Rapids.
