Volleyball Wins Husson Volleyball Invitational Tournament

Bangor, ME - The volleyball team traveled to Maine to play in the Husson University Volleyball Invitational Tournament and lost only one set in winning the tournament. On Friday, Michigan-Dearborn swept Unity College and the University of Maine at Presque Isle. In those matches the Wolverines used a balanced offensive attack and got some great setting by Daniella Barile (FR/Plymouth MI). Briann Alspaugh (JR/St. Louis MI) paced the offense while middle hitters Katherine Nealy (SO/Southfield, MI) and Kristina Ivanovic (SO/Macomb, MI) set the tone for the weekend. Head Coach Eric Stark wanted to focus on three key areas of hard work, discipline, and energy and felt like Friday was a great step to establishing that identity.

Michigan-Dearborn continued their success on Saturday by sweeping the University of Maine at Machias and Husson University. In the last match of the tournament, the Wolverines were tired as they were playing in their fifth match in 24 hours, but the team perservered and defeated the University of Maine at Fort Kent in four sets. Shayla Smalls (SO/Canton, MI) led the way with 35 kills in 75 attempts. Alspaugh had two matches without an attacking error and had 12 aces for the tournament. Barile had 173 assists on the weekend as she put the ball where the hitters could succeed. Michigan-Dearborn's defense was also solid with Taylor Bejma (SO/Garden City) and Raechel Warchock (SR/Jackson, MI) sharing libero duties. Bejma averaged 3.93 digs per set, and Warchock averaged 3.86 digs per set on the weekend

The volleyball team returns to action on Wednesday, September 7th, as they open up WHAC play on the road against Marygrove College.
