Wolverines Split Doubleheader with Cornerstone

DETROIT, Mich.- The University of Michigan- Dearborn women's softball team (21-14, 11-7) welcomed the Cornerstone University Golden Eagles (17-17, 11-9) to Gary L. Bryce Field at Wayne State on Friday (Apr. 21) for an in conference doubleheader. The teams would split the pair of games, with Dearborn winning game one 5-4 and Cornerstone taking game two 4-2. 

 

Game One 

 

The Wolverines found themselves in a 2-0 hole before an RBI double from senior Makenna Millhorn that scored Claire Muehlbrandt got them on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. 

 

Dearborn would take the lead in the bottom of the sixth when senior Gabby Rolak (1) hit a two-run shot over the left field fence, making the score 3-2. 

 

The Golden Eagles would regain the lead in the top of the seventh off an RBI single by Moriah Sprague. 

 

A two-run home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the seventh inning by senior Amber Cheplick (1) would win it in walk-off fashion for the Wolverines by a final score of 5-4. 

 

Senior right-hander Lanie Ellinger (9-5) would go the distance for her ninth win of the year. Ellinger allowed four runs on 10 hits, walking two and striking out nine Golden Eagle batters in seven innings. 

 

Game Two 

 

Dearborn peppered Cornerstone with 13 hits in game two but only managed to get two runners across the plate, losing by a final score of 4-2. 

 

The Golden Eagles got off to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Sam Timmer reached on a fielder's choice for the RBI. 

 

The Wolverines would tie the score at 1-1 on a double to right center field by Olivia Scott that scored Marisa Vermiglio. Dearborn rallied in the bottom of the seventh with three hits, but the comeback came up short, with the Wolverines only getting one run across the dish. 

 

Sophomore Hannah Koch (4-4) takes the loss allowing four runs on seven hits. Koch walked two and struck out two in 5.1 innings. Senior Sydni Uhlenberg would relieve Koch in the circle in the sixth inning, giving up zero runs and zero hits while walking two and striking out one in 1.2 innings of work.

Dearborn welcomes Aquinas College to Wayne State's Gary L. Bryce Field for a conference doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 22). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
