Softball Bounces Back by Sweeping Northwestern Ohio

Lima, OH - The softball team did not let Friday's losses to Madonna carry over to Saturday's games against Northwestern Ohio. Michigan-Dearborn swept the host Northwestern Ohio Racers 19-10 (5 innings) and 10-9 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. In game one, it remained scoreless until both teams scored three runs in the second inning. In the top of the third, Michigan-Dearborn scored seven runs to take control of the game. Gina Verduzco (SO/Portage, MI) started the inning off with a solo homerun. From there, the Wolverines just kept getting on base with walks and hits, as Jordan Ewald (SO/Wixom, MI) singled in two runs, but no other Michigan-Dearborn player accounted for two RBIs in the inning. Ewald continued to hit the ball well as she had two more hits in the game and finished with six RBIs as Michigan-Dearborn won 19-10. Alex Elwell (SR/Kalamazoo, MI) started the game and went four innings in getting her third win of the season.

Michigan-Dearborn's bats were still sizzling in game two as the Wolverines scored five runs in the top of the first. Celeste Miller (SO/Plymouth, MI) singled home two runs as Michigan-Dearborn sent 10 players to the plate in the inning. The Racers responded with four runs in the bottom of the first off Verduzco and then chased her out of the game with two more runs in the second inning to take a 6-5 lead. The lead was short lived as Michigan-Dearborn would score four runs in the top of the third, with Ewald again providing the big hit - a three run homer. The Wolverines offense went silent in the next three innings, and Northwestern Ohio would tie the game at 9 with three runs off Kitchen in the bottom of the sixth. Alexis Powell (SR/Canton, MI) started the top of the seventh with a walk, and Maria Rodriguez (SR/Dearborn Heights, MI) pinch ran for her. After a sacrifice bunt by Riley Hison (FR/Macomb Township, MI), Rodriguez advanced to third base. Sarah Prashad (FR/Mississauga, Ontario) would then single home Rodriguez as Michigan-Dearborn took a 10-9 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Kitchen would only allow a single in the seventh inning as the Wolverines won 10-9.

Kitchen got the win improving to 5-0 on the season. Ewald finished the doubleheader with four hits and nine RBIs. Valerie Bertani (SR/Westland, MI), Kylie Hill (JR/Adrian, MI), and Taylor Moceri (JR/Sterling Heights, MI), each had four hits on the day as well. The softball team will travel to Grand Rapids, on Sunday to take on Aquinas College at 1:00pm. The games will be played at West Catholic High School in Grand Rapids.
