KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's soccer team completed the 2018 nonconference season with a thrilling win over Kalamazoo College, an NCAA Division III program, Tuesday in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The Wolverines got the game-winning goal from sophomore Chad Schmerheim in the 86th minute, giving UM-Dearborn a 2-1 win over the Hornets. The win sends UM-Dearborn into the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season with a record of 3-2-1 overall.
After freshman defender Daniel Oliver cleared a ball nearly off the line that got in behind UM-Dearborn sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Mezuk, the Wolverines transitioned down the field with the speed of freshman Jack Barnett. After working his way down the sideline into the box, Barnett's cross found Schmerheim for the game-winner, his second goal of the season.
The Wolverines got the scoring in the 18th minute when a pass from junior Luke Baker to senior Joseph Georgic was redirected into the Kalamazoo net by a defender for an own goal. The Hornets got the tying tally in the 64th to set up the dramatic finish.
Mezuk, in his first start of the season, made eight saves in net. The Hornets outshot the Wolverines 19-11 in the match.
UM-Dearborn opens up the WHAC season against Lourdes University at 3 pm Saturday at Gabriel Richard High School in Riverview, Mich.
