Men?s Basketball Adds a Third Conference Win to Their Record

Dearborn, MI- The men's basketball team added a third conference win to their (2-7) record by defeating Madonna University 71-63. Every Wolverine found themselves time on the court to help defeat the Crusaders. Michigan jumped out on top by scoring first and stayed on top for the rest of the game. As a team, Dearborn shot 48% from the field while holding the Crusaders to 39%. Although Michigan had three more turnovers than Madonna's ten, Michigan out-rebounded Madonna 39-30. Leading in both field goal percentage and rebounds wasn't enough for Michigan Dearborn because they took that step behind the three point line and went 7/14 (50%). Jason Penn lead the team with 19 points and 7 rebounds, as Jamiel Strickland also contributed 19 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals.
Penn put the first two points of the game on the board to give Michigan Dearborn the first lead of the game. Nearly 50 seconds later Madonna had tied the game up two different times, before Michigan took control of the half with 16:15 left on the clock. The Wolverines shot 52% (18-34) from the field along with a stellar percentage of 55.6% (5/9) from behind the arch. Michigan's biggest faults in the first half was, allowing Khalil Malone to shoot a total of 17 points and had 8 personal fouls giving the crusaders 5 extra points from the free throw line. Darryl Mobley shot 2 for 3 from behind the three point line as Strickland also went 3/ 5 from behind the arch. Penn lead the team in the half with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Michigan headed to the locker room with a 43-29 lead at the half.
The second half began with a Michigan turnover made by Penn. Penn redeemed himself by creating a Madonna offensive turnover by stealing the ball back from Malone (MU), resulting in a fast break that generated 2 points from the paint. With 14:33 left in the game Penn made a free throw, giving the Wolverines their largest lead of 19 points and a score of 51-32. The Crusaders never gave up and brought the Wolverines 19 point lead down to 4 points with 2:25 left in the game. Michigan answered back with a three point shot followed by Madonna fouling which boosted Michigan to their 71-63 conference win.
The men's basketball team will compete next on Wednesday, January 14 at Indiana Tech.
