Wolverines Hold On to Earn a Split with Madonna

ANN ARBOR, Mich.-  The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team (16-11, 6-4) welcomed the Madonna University Crusaders (23-9, 6-4) to Ann Arbor for a conference doubleheader at Alumni Field at Carol Hutchins Stadium on Monday (Apr 10). The teams would battle to split the series, with Madonna winning the first 5-0 and Dearborn taking the second 7-6. 

 

Game One

 

The Crusaders got on the board quickly, scoring a run in the top of the first on a fielding error by the Wolverines for a 1-0 lead. Then, in the top of the fifth, Madonna added four runs on four singles, chasing starting pitcher right-hander Sydni Uhlenberg (6-4) from the game and handing the star pitcher her fourth loss of the season. 

 

Hannah Koch would enter the game in relief of Uhlenberg, allowing one hit and zero runs in 2.2 innings of work. 

 

Wolverine hitters could only spread out three base hits during the game against Crusader pitcher Maeson Schlaud (14-2), earning her the complete game shutout victory. 

 

Game Two 

 

After getting blanked in the opener, UM-Dearborn was fired up to start game two, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. First,  Makenna Millhorn hit a laser out to left field for an RBI double that scored Shae Scott. Lanie Ellinger would follow up with a sacrifice fly to center field for an RBI that scored Amber Cheplick

 

Madonna would get on the board in the top of the second inning scoring on a Wolverine throwing error, making the score 2-1. 

 

The scoring continued for UM-Dearborn in the bottom of the second when the Wolverines scored two runs in an inning that included a pair of singles from Marisa Vermiglio and S. Scott. 

 

The Crusaders would come right back in the top of the third with a run of their own, cutting the Wolverine lead to 4-2

 

Two Crusader errors combined with timely hitting, including a double by Cheplick and a Millhorn single, put the Wolverines up by five runs with a score of 7-2. 

 

Madonna would battle back, scoring runs in the fifth and sixth to get back to within one at 7-6. 

 

Wolverine starting pitcher L. Ellinger (6-4) would shut the door on the Crusaders in the seventh, allowing zero runs earning her the complete game victory, 7-6. 

 

Next Up

UM-Dearborn travels to Cleary University for an in-conference doubleheader at Lake Trust Stadium. The matchup is a make-up for a March 29th contest. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
