Softball closes trip with split against WV Tech

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team completed play at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic with a doubleheader against West Virginia Tech Friday in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Wolverines rallied late in game one, but WV Tech held on for a 5-3 win. UM-Dearborn answered in game two with a 6-4 victory to earn the split. The results push UM-Dearborn 10-6 overall this season.

In game one, WV Tech scored two in the first and led 5-0 after five. The Wolverines chipped away with three runs in the sixth highlighted by a two-run double from Megan Lohner, followed by an RBI triple from Madelin Skene.

UM-Dearborn loaded the bases in the seventh but failed to score. Aspen Starr finished with two hits, while Lohner added a double, two RBIs and a run scored.

Julie St. John (0-2) took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs on five hits, walking one and striking out two in three innings. Erin McCune pitched three innings of relief, allowing two unearned runs on three hits, walking three and striking out two.

After WV Tech took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third of game two, UM-Dearborn responded with a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Skene. The Wolverines tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth with an RBI triple from Skene an RBI single by Kayla Laquiere.

The Wolverines took the lead in the sixth, scoring an unearned run, followed by a two-run home run from Aspen Starr, her second of the season. WV Tech got one back in the seventh, but Skene took over on the mound for a save.

Ashlynn Henderson earned her third win of the season (3-1), allowing four runs, two earned on six hits, while striking out five in 6.1 innings.

The Wolverines return home and open Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play against Lourdes University on March 26 at Alumni Field in Ann Arbor, Mich.
