McConnell throws No-Hitter, Wolverines win two

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team earned two wins as the Wolverines returned to action after two off days at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic Thursday in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Kaylie McConnell pitched the first no-hitter of her career in the opening game, as the Wolverines topped Hilbert College 8-0 in five innings. UM-Dearborn jumped out to an early lead against Gwynedd Mercy University and held off a late rally by Griffins to take the second game of the day 9-6.

The wins push UM-Dearborn to 9-5 on the season as UM-Dearborn prepares for its final day of competition in South Carolina.

McConnell (1-0) was dominant against Hilbert, tossing all five innings and striking out two. She held a perfect game into the fifth before it was broken up with a walk.

At the plate, freshman Aspen Starr hit the first home run of her career, while the Wolverines finished with seven total hits. Madelin Skene recorded two hits, including a double and added two RBIs.

Against Gwynedd Mercy, the Wolverines scored the first seven runs of the game, including five runs in the third. Starr led the way with two hits, including a double and a triple, along with two RBIs. Skene and Kayla Laquiere each added two hits.

Freshman Erin McCune earned the win on the mound, allowing four runs on eight hits, while striking out three. UM-Dearborn finished with nine runs on 11 hits and one error.

The Wolverines close out play at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic with a doubleheader against West Virginia Tech 9:30 am Friday.
