Softball Falls in WHAC Tournament; WHAC Honors Released

Sylvania, OH - Day two of the WHAC Softball Tournament had Michigan-Dearborn playing top-seeded Davenport University with the winner playing in the championship game on Monday. Davenport scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. That was all WHAC Pitcher of the Year Emily Maves would need. Maves shut the Wolverines offense down allowing five hits in pitching a complete game shutout as Davenport won 6-0. The loss meant Michigan-Dearborn would face Lourdes University with the winner playing Davenport in the championship game.

Lourdes jumped out on top early scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Michigan-Dearborn would tie the score when Alexis Powell (SR/Canton, MI) doubled in Taylor Moceri (JR/Sterling Heights, MI) and Sarah Prashad (FR/Mississauga, Ontario). Lourdes got the lead right back scoring three runs in the top of the second inning. The Wolverines could not take advantage of opportunities and managed just one more run in losing 5-3. The loss ended the season for the softball team - a season in which they tied a program record for wins with 31.

On Thursday, the WHAC announced softball honors. The Wolverines had two All-WHAC First Team members in Ellie Kauten (SO/Shelby Township, MI) and Taylor Moceri. Four other Michigan-Dearborn softball players were named All-WHAC Honorable Mention. They were Valerie Bertani (SR/Westland, MI), Jordan Ewald (SO/Wixom, MI), Kylie Hill (JR/Adrian, MI), and Gina Verduzco (SO/Portage, MI). Makenzie Trowbridge (SR/Trenton, MI) was named to the Champions of Character Team, an honor bestowed upon those student-athletes who exemplify the five core values of the NAIA - integrity, respect, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship. The softball team loses seven seniors, including Powell, Trowbridge and Bertani, but has a bright future with Verduzco, Ewald, Hill, and others who will look to break 31 wins next season.
