Softball Team Unveils Banner and Has Successful Fall

The second annual Michigan-Dearborn student-athlete, coaches, and athletics department staff holiday picture had a ceremony honoring last year's softball team. The 2014-15 softball team was the runner-up in the WHAC Softball Tournament losing 7-6 to Davenport in the championship game. The ceremony had Assistant Coach Marc GIllis talk about last year's team and their accomplishments. After Coach Gillis completed his speech, the team unveiled the runner-up banner which hangs in the rafters of the gymnasium in the field house. Last season's team won 26 games, a 7 game improvement from the previous season.

This year's team looks to continue those winning ways. If the fall is any indication, the team is well on their way to more success. The team competed in six tournaments during the fall and compiled a 25-8-1 record, including a win over NCAA Division I Eastern Michigan University. The softball team returns two-time All-WHAC outfielder Val Bertani along with infielder Taylor Moceri who was also an All-WHAC player last season. WHAC Honorable Mention players Alexis Powell and Makenzie Trowbridge also return and will look to continue to lead the Wolverines offense. On the pitching front, the team will look to returners Abby Jewll, Alex Elwell, and Gina Verduzco to lead the way. Incoming pitchers Candace Kitchen and Julie St. John along with outfielder Morgan Larkin and utility players Kylie Hill and Rachel Clem, will look to make their presence felt and help add depth to the team. The softball team will begin the season in Tuscon, Arizona with games beginning on March 3rd.
