Wolverines Fall In Road Matchup Against Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn (2-11, 1-7) women's basketball team squared off against Aquinas College on the road on Saturday (Dec. 10). The Wolverines kept the game close heading into the half, but the Saints prevailed 62-50 inside the Sturrus Center. 

UM-Dearborn Leaders

Matalina Ochoa led the Wolverines with a game-high 13 points off the bench. Ochoa played 26 minutes and shot 5-of-9 from the field. Ochoa accounted for two of the Maize & Blue's six trifectas. Abby Fullerton added 12 points thanks to three made triples. India Grissom rounded out the Wolverines in double figures as she was a perfect 7-7 from the charity stripe on her way to 11 points. Grissom added five rebounds and dished out five assists on the afternoon. 

Aquinas Leaders 

Brighton Miller paced the Saints with 12 points on 4-of-9 from behind the arc. Isabel Reemsnyder was the only other Saint in double figures as she connected on 3-of-6 three-pointers on the afternoon. The Saints had scoring contributions from 12 different players and forced the Wolverines into 20 turnovers. 

Inside the Game

The Maize and Blue jumped out to an early lead carrying an 8-5 lead with 5:40 remaining in the first. Grissom converted a layup to make it 10-5 after swiping a loose ball away from the Saints. After the Saints cut down the Dearborn lead to 12-10 after a made three-pointer, Fullerton drove to the rim and converted the layup to bring the Wolverine lead to four. Aquinas would score the quarter's final five points to take a 15-14 lead. 

Aquinas would jump to a seven-point lead in the second after back-to-back triples to take a 21-14 lead. Fullerton would trim the lead to four with 4:00 remaining in the half after she drilled a three to make it 28-24. After an empty possession for the Saints, Ochoa brought the Wolverines within two after she drove the lane and made a layup. Aquinas would go on a mini-run to stretch their lead to five at the half, leading 37-32. 

The Saints would limit the Wolverines to just five third-quarter points and take complete control of the contest in the second half culminating in a 62-50 final.

The Wolverines travel to play Spring Arbor in a non-conference matchup on Saturday (Dec. 17) at 1 pm.
