Cornerstone Tops Women's Basketball

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's basketball team fell behind early and could not overcome a consistent shooting night by the home team as Cornerstone University won the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference match-up Wednesday night in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an 8-2 lead early in the first quarter and never looked back as they defeated the Wolverines 83-58. The loss drops UM-Dearborn to 5-13 overall and 0-9 in the WHAC.

After taking a 15-8 lead into the second quarter, Cornerstone outscored UM-Dearborn 27-8 in the second quarter to take control of the game. The Golden Eagles shot 50% from the field in each half and only missed one free throw the entire game making 27-of-28 free throws while the Wolverines went 6-of-8 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Jeorgia Jones (SO/Detroit, MI) led UM-Dearborn with 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting while junior Natalie Spala (JR/Livonia, MI) shot 4-of-5 from the field en route to scoring 11 points. Senior Megan Swick (SR/Grosse Ile, Mich.) led the Wolverines with seven rebounds while senior Meredith Williams (SR/Novi, Mich.) had five rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

UM-Dearborn shot 24-of-53 from the field and 4-of-18 from deep and outrebounded Cornerstone 30-26.

Cornerstone had three players score in double digits led by Cass Vredevoogd who led all scorers with 18 points while Sydney Muller added 15 points and six rebounds.

UM-Dearborn continues WHAC play Saturday at Madonna University at 1:00 pm.
