Wolverines power past Bethel in DH

NOVI, Mich. – Ryan Beadle and the University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball team put on a show with the bats in a doubleheader sweep of Bethel College Saturday at Novi High School in Novi, Mich.

The Wolverines trailed 8-2 in the opener but rallied for eight unanswered runs to top the Pilots 12-9. The Wolverines controlled the finale from the start, opening up a 7-0 lead and winning 13-3 in eight innings. The wins push UM-Dearborn's win streak to four games, a program record for the second-year team. The Wolverines are 4-1-1 overall this season.

In game one, the Wolverines fell behind early, as the Pilots built a six-run lead heading to the bottom of the fifth. UM-Dearborn chipped away with two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Beadle, who finished with four hits in the game, drove home a run with a single in the fifth, while Andrew Capone picked up an RBI single in the sixth.

UM-Dearborn took its first lead of the game in the seventh with four runs, starting with an RBI double from Waymond Lemon Jr. After the Wolverines cut the deficit to 8-7 on a Bethel error, Capone doubled home a pair to move UM-Dearborn in front.

Lemon Jr. broke the game open with a three-run home run in the eighth to push UM-Dearborn to the win. Beadle finished 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Lemon Jr. added two hits, four RBIs and two runs. Capone was solid in the lead-off spot with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Jacob Lapham (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory with 3.2 innings of relief work, allowing no runs on two hits with one walk and a strikeout.  

The Wolverines scored in each of the first five innings of the second game to take control early. After Beadle doubled home one in the first inning, Capone added two RBIs with a single in the second. UM-Dearborn scored four in the third, including RBIs from Jacob Leija and Capone.

The Pilots trimmed the difference to 7-3 after the top of the fourth, but UM-Dearborn kept the offense going. Lemon Jr. singled home one in the fourth and Capone added another in the fifth. Beadle capped off his dominating series with a three-run home run in the eighth to close it out.

Dan Bos (1-0) got the start and the win for the Wolverines, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, while walking four and striking out two. Nick Montroy pitched 3.1 innings of relief, keeping Bethel off the board, while Tyler Troyer added a scoreless eighth inning.

Beadle finished with three hits, four RBIs and two runs, while Capone added three hits and five RBIs. Lemon Jr. and Tanner Hodges each recorded two hits in the win.

The Wolverines continue the fall portion of the schedule with a doubleheader at Spring Arbor University at 1 pm Friday in Spring Arbor, Mich.

NOTES: Through six games this season, Beadle is batting .600 with three home runs, 15 RBIs and nine runs scored … Lemon Jr. is hitting .440 with 11 RBIs, one home run and seven runs scored … the Wolverines are batting .345 as a team.
