Wolverines Stumble in Tricky Weekend Series

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball set out to the west side of the state for a tricky slate of conference games against the Cornerstone Golden Eagles and the Aquinas College Saints. The Wolverine bats struggled on the weekend, getting outscored 27-8 in four games.

The Wolverines dropped game one against Cornerstone 7-2. The Wolverines surrendered runs in two innings, but a crooked number in the second inning was all the Golden Eagles needed in the contest. The two Wolverine runs came by way of the long ball as Shae Scott and Makaila Cooper both hit home runs for the Maize & Blue. Hannah Koch threw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Wolverines, striking out a pair and surrendering just one base hit. The Golden Eagles claimed game two by way of the run rule, scoring nine runs in the final three innings to put away the Wolverines. UM-Dearborn recorded just four base hits, highlighted by a triple from Mia Nightengale and an RBI single from Brooklynn Jones in the fifth.

On Saturday, the Wolverines needed extra innings to decide game one against Aquinas. After an RBI single from the Saints in the first inning, the Wolverines responded with RBI singles in the second and third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Lindsay Marlewitz scored Jones on an single, while Makaila Cooper scored Olivia Scott on a squeeze play in the third to take the 2-1 lead. Down to their final outs in the seventh, the Saints rallied to tie the game on a manufactured run to tie the game at two. After the Wolverines couldn't score a run in the top of the eighth, the Saints put the game to bed after a walk-off infield single to win 3-2.

The Saints came out swinging in game two as they tallied seven runs in the first three innings to put the Wolverines on their heels. UM-Dearborn tallied just five hits in the game, led by Shae Scott, who went 1-2 with an RBI double and a SAC fly in the fifth.

The Wolverines will take on Lourdes on Thursday (Apr. 18) at 3:30.
