ADRIAN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball team returned to action by taking on the Siena Heights University Saints in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup Sunday afternoon in Adrian, Mich.
Game one saw the Saints take a one-run lead into the sixth inning, however the Wolverine bats would respond by tying the game due to a Shane Fugate single that brought home Nathan Mack. Matthew Williams would give UM-Dearborn the late lead as he singled home Andrew Capone. SHU would strike back in the bottom of the seventh, tying it up on a single and winning the game on a walk-off wild-pitch, handing the Wolverines a 3-2 defeat.
UM-Dearborn was led by the performances of Fugate (2-4, 3B, 1 RBI) and Williams (2-4, 2B, 1 RBI), while Christian Ochoa, Max McLennan, and Drake Schultz would each record a hit.
Matthew Silka would get the start for the Wolverines, giving up two hits and one run, while walking five and striking out five in three innings of work. Tyler Troyer would get three innings of relief work, giving up one hit and striking out one, while Nathan Mack would take the loss in one inning of work, giving up two hits and two runs, while striking out one.
In game two, the Saints jumped out to an early lead after to the first and would add to it in the fourth, on their way to a 10-0 win and a sweep of the Wolverines.
Robert Begley (2-3), Capone (2-4), and McLennan (2-3) would all record multi-hit games, while Max Tomaszewski, Fugate, and Williams would each add one.
Troyer would get the start, giving up six hits and four runs in the game, while walking one in three innings of work. Garrett Gamble would get 2/3 of an inning of work, giving up three hits and four runs, while striking out one. Nathaniel Wandrie would walk three and strike out three in his inning and 1/3 of work, while David Egged would take the loss, giving up three hits and two runs, while striking out two.
The setback moves UM-Dearborn to 5-16 overall and 1-7 in the WHAC.
The Wolverines return to action with a double-header against the Lourdes University Gray Wolves at 2 PM Tuesday at Mercy Field in Sylvania, Ohio.
