UM-Dearborn beats Bethel, falls to No. 12 IWU

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team continued play at THE Spring Games with two games Tuesday in Kissimmee, Fla.

The Wolverines pulled away late from Bethel University (IN) for a 6-2 win before falling to No. 12 Indiana Wesleyan University 5-2. The split moves UM-Dearborn to 6-8 overall on the season.

Against Bethel, UM-Dearborn got the scoring started quickly with a first-inning, lead-off home run from Amber Cheplick. The Wolverines doubled their lead in the second with a solo home run from Marisa Vermiglio.

Up 3-2 heading to the seventh, UM-Dearborn put up three runs in the final frame to secure the win. Makenna Millhorn doubled home a run, while Megan Lohner and Liz Grumeretz each added an RBI.

Madelin Skene (2-1) continued her strong pitching in Florida with six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits, walking four and striking out four.

IWU took a four-run lead in the fourth inning of the finale, but UM-Dearborn answered right back with the third home run in two days from Skene to cut the deficit in half. The Wildcats held on the rest of the way to escape with the win.

Ashlynn Henderson got the start on the mound, allowing four runs, one earned, on eight hits, while walking one and striking out one.

The Wolverines have a day off on Wednesday before playing three on Thursday, starting against Spring Arbor University at 10:30 am.
