Skene's two home runs lead Wolverines to win

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – After opening the day with a narrow defeat against a highly-ranked Marian University program, the University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team rebounded with the home-run ball to pick up a win Monday in Kissimmee, Fla.

The Wolverines hung right with No. 4 Marian University in the first game of the day, but were unable to get on the board in a 2-0 loss. Madelin Skene led the Wolverine offense with two home runs in game two against Mount Vernon Nazarene University, and UM-Dearborn held on for a 6-4 win.

The split moves UM-Dearborn to 5-7 overall this season.

Against Marian, the Wolverine offense was held to six hits, including two for Gina Liss. Ashlynn Henderson was strong on the mound for UM-Dearborn, allowing two runs on nine hits, while striking out two.

In the win over MVNU, UM-Dearborn was outhit 14-5, but the Wolverines came away with three home runs, including two for Skene who got the scoring started in the first inning with a solo shot. Skene added a three-run home run in the fourth to give UM-Dearborn a 5-1 lead.

After the Cougars cut the Wolverine lead to one, Aspen Starr added a solo home run in the fifth.

Reigning Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, Erin McCune, got the start on the mound and earned the win. She allowed four runs, three earned, on 10 hits, while striking out two. Henderson picked up the save, pitching a scoreless seventh.

UM-Dearborn returns to action with two more on Tuesday, starting against Bethel University (Ind) at 2:45 pm. The Wolverines will take on No. 12 Indiana Wesleyan University at 5 pm.
