WOLVERINES EARN FIRST PROGRAM WHAC WIN

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn baseball team earned its first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference win, topping Aquinas College in the finale of a three-game series Sunday in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Wolverines did not trail in the contest, scoring seven times in the first five innings en route to a 10-6 win. The Saints swept the Wolverines in a doubleheader Saturday, taking the opener 15-5 in seven innings while edging UM-Dearborn 8-7 in the second game.

The series moves UM-Dearborn to 3-17 overall and 1-11 in the WHAC.

In the finale, the Wolverines jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI from Danny Kerr in the first inning. After the Saints tied the score, UM-Dearborn scored three in the top of the third, including an RBI triple from Chase Turner (SR/Franklin, MI).

The Saints answered back with three in the bottom of the inning, but the Wolverines retook the lead with three more in the top of the fourth, highlighted by an RBI single from Jacob Leija (FR/Southgate, MI). Kerr added another RBI on a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and the Wolverines scored two more on a pair of errors by the Saints in the seventh. The Saints committed five errors in the game.

Cameron Tubbs (FR/Monroe, MI) got the win on the mound for the Wolverines, pitching 4.1 innings in relief. He allowed one run on four hits while walking four and striking out four. Andrew Capone (FR/Warren, MI) led the offense with four hits and two runs, while Justin Dolney (FR/Canton, MI), Ryan Beadle(SO/Kalamazoo, MI) and Turner each added two hits.

In game one, Kerr and Waymond Lemon Jr. (JR/Detroit, MI) each finished with two hits and an RBI, while Beadle added a hit and two runs.  John Dyda (FR/Wyandotte, MI) took the loss for UM-Dearborn.

The second game was back and forth with Kerr putting UM-Dearborn up 1-0 in the first on his first home run as a Wolverine. Kerr finished with two hits and two RBIs, while Cole VanWagoner (SO/Mancelona, MI) added two hits and an RBI. Dan Bos (FR/Livonia, MI) was charged with the loss, allowing eight runs in 6.2 innings, while walking five and striking out six.

The Wolverines continue WHAC play against Siena Heights University starting with a doubleheader Saturday in Adrian, Mich. UM-Dearborn will be the host team for the series at SHU.
