DEARBORN, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn women's basketball team opened the 2017-18 season against Midway University in a nonconference matchup Wednesday at the UM-Dearborn, Fieldhouse.
UM-Dearborn rallied from a late deficit in the first half, sparked by a 3-pointer at the buzzer from junior Natalie Spala (JR/Livonia, MI) to trim the Eagle halftime lead to six. The Wolverines hit seven shots from deep in the second half building a late lead. With nine seconds to play in regulation, senior Megan Swick (SR/Grosse Ile, Mich.) grabbed a defensive rebound, was fouled and went to the line for a pair of free throws to put the Wolverines on top 70-67.
On the last Midway possession of regulation, Kelsee Kinder went up for a 3-pointer for the Eagles and was fouled. She hit all three free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining to tie the score. The Wolverines did get a good look at a game winner, but a layup from Jeorgia Jones (SO/Detroit, MI) missed the mark, sending the contest to overtime. The Wolverines were outscored 8-2 in the extra frame, falling 78-72.
The loss drops UM-Dearborn to 0-1 to start the season.
