Sylvania, Ohio – The Michigan-Dearborn softball team captured the program's first WHAC Tournament Championship on Monday with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Aquinas College.  In game one. Aquinas defeated UM-Dearborn 7-3 to force the 'if necessary' game.

Aquinas got the scoring started with a solo homerun in the top of the third.  The Wolverines would tie it up in the bottom half of the third when Amber Cheplick singled down the left field line scoring Gina Liss.

Both starting pitchers were throwing the ball well as the score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth.  Haley Tiseo got hit by a pitch and pitch runner Audrey Asgarally  pinch ran for her and stole second base.  Jaclyn Clark came off the bench as a pinch hitter and delivered a single scoring Asgarally.

Lanie Ellinger ensured that lead would hold up as she pitched a complete game allowing just one run while striking out eight batters.  The win improved her record to 16-5 on the season.

The softball team will now head to the NAIA Opening Round of the softball championship next week.  Their opponents and location will be announced on Tuesday, May 19th, at 5pm Eastern Time.
