Wolverines swept by Cougars

HOWELL, Mich.- The UM-Dearborn softball team returned to action on the road Friday afternoon with a double-header against the Cleary University Cougars in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference match-up.

In Game One, the Cougars would used a six-run fourth inning, despite a Wolverine rally, on their way to an 8-4 victory. Leading UM-Dearborn was Madelin Skene (3-4, 2 3B, RS) and Marisa Vermiglio (2-4, 2B, RBI, RS). Amy Jarrett, Amber Cheplick, and Lanie Ellinger would each add an RBI.

Shae Scott got the start on the mound for the Wolverines, taking the loss. Scott gave up two hits, with six walks and two strikeouts in three innings of work. Ellinger pitched two innings in relief, giving up four hits, while walking four and striking out two. Ashlynn Henderson would come in for one inning, giving up one walk. 

In Game Two, the Wolverines would take a one-run lead in the top of the eighth despite the Cougars tying up the game and forcing extra innings. Clearly University would respond with a walk-off single, driving in the winning run for the 8-7 win over UM-Dearborn and the series sweep.

Leading the Wolverines was Gina Liss (2-4, RBI, RS), Cheplick (2-3, BB, RBI, RS), and Vermiglio (1-3, 2B, RS). Aspen Starr would add a 2-run home run as well.

Erin McCune got the start on the mound in the losing effort, going 3.1 innings. McCune gave up four hits, while walking four and striking out two.

Henderson would come in for 4.1 innings of relief work, giving up six hits.

The two losses drops UM-Dearborn to 9-12-1 overall and 9-12-1 in the WHAC.

The Wolverines will now wait to see how the WHAC standings play out to see if they qualify for the conference post-season May 5th- 7th hosted by  Cornerstone University at Pacesetter Park in Sylvania, Ohio
