Wolverines drop WHAC Tourney opener to Saints

SYLVANIA, Ohio - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team opened the 2018 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament with a tight pitching matchup against Aquinas College Wednesday at Pacesetter Park in Sylvania, Ohio.

The No. 7 seed Wolverines got a one-hitter from senior Gina Verduzco (SR/Portage, MI) on the mound, but No. 2 seed Aquinas was able to find the game's lone run in the sixth to take the contest 1-0. The loss for the Wolverines drops the team to 18-17 overall and sets up an elimination game with No. 3 seed Siena Heights University, which lost its opener to Indiana Tech.

The matchup with SHU was supposed to take place immediately following the loss to Aquinas, however thunderstorms rolled through Sylvania and caused the game to be postponed until 2 pm Thursday.

Verduzco finished with six innings pitched, allowing one run on one hit, while walking four and striking out four. UM-Dearborn was held to three hits with Verduzco, Jordan Ewald (SR/Wixom, MI) and Ellie Kauten (SR/Shelby Township, MI) each finishing with a single.

The Wolverines split a pair of games at home this season with SHU.
