Wolverines open season with sweep of No. 18 Niagara

DEARBORN, Mich. - The No. 12 University of Michigan-Dearborn hockey team started the season off on the right foot with a weekend sweep of No. 18 Niagara University, taking the second game of the series 3-2 Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena Saturday in Dearborn, Mich.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Purple Eagles eventually tied the score. Freshman Justin Dunn (FR/Trenton, Mich.) answered the bell in the third period with his third goal of the season to give UM-Dearborn the win. The win moves the Wolverines to 2-0 this season as they get ready to enter GLCHL competition next weekend.

Tyler Groat (SO/Wyandotte, Mich.) showed what earned him ACHA All-American a year ago. The sophomore scored just under 10 minutes into the first on assists from Andrew Spiegel (SO/Riverview, Mich.) and Marcus McSweeney (JR/Chandler, Ariz.). Groat added another late in the period on helpers from Ryan Urso (JR/Livonia, Mich.) and Andy Carreras (SO/Swartz Creek, Mich.).

The Purple Eagles did not let the Wolverines head to the locker room on a good note, as Niagara managed to find the back of the net with under a minute to play. The second period saw the physical play pick up and Niagara again scraped together a goal to tie the game at 2-2 heading to the final period.

One night after netting a pair in his Wolverine debut, Dunn chipped home his second-straight game winner for UM-Dearborn early in the third period. The home team held on to start the season 2-0.

The Wolverines outshot the Purple Eagles 43-26. Nathan Ferris (JR/Weyburn, Saskatchewan) got his second win of the season, making 24 saves.
