DEARBORN, Mich. – Mahmoud Saad of men's golf and Joe Atherall of lacrosse were named the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference representatives for NAIA National Awards Day. Saad received the A.O. Duer Scholarship, and Atherall received the Dr. Leroy Walker Champions of Character Award. The League announced on Monday, July 17th.
The A.O Duer Scholarship was named in honor of the NAIA's former executive secretary, who served the association for 26 years. This award, presented annually, has been awarded since 1967 to a male and female junior student-athlete in any sport who has excelled in scholarship, character, and citizenship. Saad, a member of the UM-Dearborn men's golf team, holds a near 4.0 GPA and also excels on the course proving to be a force in the WHAC after posting a pair of 78s early in the season last year.
Atherall receives the Dr. Leroy Walker Champion of Character award. This award is given to student-athletes with at least junior academic status who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and campus and community leadership while embracing the five core character values that the NAIA embraces. Atherall was an integral part of the 15 for Life campaign that the lacrosse team participates in yearly. These individuals move on to the national ballot, which will be announced in mid-September.
