Wolverines split on day one of WHAC Tournament

SYLVANIA, Ohio - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team overcame a loss in game one to stay alive with a late-inning rally in game two on opening day of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Postseason Tournament Wednesday in Sylvania, Ohio.

The Wolverines were unable to solve the pitching from Concordia University in the opening game, falling 3-0. In an elimination game with Siena Heights University, UM-Dearborn erased a two-run deficit with four runs in the fifth inning to capture a 5-3 win over the Saints.

With weather forcing the postponement of Thursday's schedule, the Wolverines will wait till Friday to resume play, taking on the University of Northwestern Ohio in an elimination game at 2 p.m., weather permitting.

Against Concordia, the Wolverines managed just two hits off Samantha Eubanks, while the Cardinals found some timely hitting to edge UM-Dearborn. Gina Verduzco (JR/Portage, MI) pitched a strong game, going six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits.

The Wolverines fell behind 3-1 in the fourth inning against SHU, but a pair of two-run doubles from Taylor Moceri (SR/Sterling Heights, MI) and Kassidy Butler (SO/Parchment, MI) put UM-Dearborn in front for good. Verduzco pitched the complete game, allowing three runs on 10 hits, while striking out four. Jordan Ewald (JR/Wixom, MI) added two hits, including a double, and scored a run for the Wolverines in the win.

UM-Dearborn moves to 28-9 overall on the season.
