Wolverines open WHAC play with tie and loss at SHU

ADRIAN, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team opened the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference season with a doubleheader at Siena Heights University Friday in Adrian, Mich.

The Wolverines dropped the first game 8-7 after a furious comeback, while the second game was stopped in the eighth inning with the score knotted at 4-4 due to darkness. The doubleheader drops UM-Dearborn to 11-5-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the WHAC.

Game one saw the Wolverines fall behind 7-0 heading to the sixth inning. UM-Dearborn did not go away, getting a rally going with a two-run single from Rachel Dolland (SO/Lake Orion, MI). The Saint's lead was cut to two when Kassidy Butler (SO/Parchment, MI) hit a three-run home run later in the inning. After SHU added a run in the bottom of the sixth, UM-Dearborn rallied again as Jordan Ewald (JR/Wixom, MI) doubled home a pair of runs, but the Saints held on for the win.

Kylie Hill (SR/Adrian, MI) and Ewald each finished with two hits, while Gina Verduzco (JR/Portage, MI) took the loss on the mound.

The Wolverines took a quick 2-0 lead in game two with a pair of runs in the first inning, which included an RBI walk from Leah Oldham (SO/Sterling Heights, MI). Butler put UM-Dearborn up 4-2 with two-run single in the fourth, but the Saints rallied to tie the game and push it to extra innings, where the contest was called due to darkness.

Hill and Butler each came away with two hits in the tie.
