Walk-Off Home Run Highlights Day Three in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn softball team played three more games on its spring-break schedule Tuesday in Clermont, Fla. The Wolverines won in dramatic fashion in the opener before splitting the final two games to move to 6-2 overall on the season.

The Wolverines were unable to the get their offense moving against Wheeling Jesuit University until there were two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. From that point, the flood gates opened and UM-Dearborn rallied for an 8-5 win. Down 4-0 and with just one out remaining, the Wolverines got started with an RBI double from Taylor Moceri (SR/Sterling Heights, MI). Gina Verduzco (JR/Portage, MI) reached on an error, which allowed two more runs to score before Jordan Ewald (JR/Wixom, MI) tied it with an RBI, plating pinch runner Kelly O'Hara (SO/Traverse City, MI).

After WJU retook the lead in the top of the eighth, the Wolverines once again faced a last chance with two outs, when Riley Hison (SO/Macomb Township, MI) drove home the tying run with a single to center field. Moceri ended the contest with a three-run walk-off home run that cleared the right field fence sending the Wolverines to the win.

The Wolverines finished with nine hits and one error, while Moceri led the way with three hits, four RBIs and two runs scored. Hison finished with two hits and two runs scored, while Sarah Prashad (SO/Mississauga, Ontario) added a hit and two runs. Kassidy Butler (SO/Parchment, MI) continued her early-season roll with two more knocks in the win.

After entering the game in the fourth inning, freshman Ashlynn Henderson (FR/Temecula, CA) took control on the mound for UM-Dearborn. She allowed one run on four hits, earning her first career win. in the process.

In the second game, UM-Dearborn shut out Mount Vernon Nazarene University 2-0. The Wolverines picked up an RBI single from Verduzco in the third and the second career RBI for LeeAnn Seidl (FR/Tecumseh, MI) in the fifth. That is all the UM-Dearborn pitching staff would need led by starter Samantha Torongeau (FR/Shelby Township, MI), who went five and a third scoreless, allowing just two hits and one walk. Verduzco came in to pitch in the sixth, facing five batters and striking out four to earn the save.

Kentucky Wesleyan College took an early lead over the Wolverines in the finale and held off an attempt at another seventh-inning rally to top UM-Dearborn 6-3. The Wolverines loaded the bases in the seventh after scoring one run, but KWC struck out the final two batters to secure the win.

Ewald and and Hison each finished with two hits in the loss. Verduzco (2-1) started the game for the Wolverines, allowing six runs, three earned, on eight hits, while striking out two.

The Wolverines have a day off Wednesday and return to action with three more games on Thursday including a doubleheader with Alma College starting at 9 a.m. in Clermont, Fla.
