Stony Brook takes opener from UM-Dearborn 4-3

DEARBORN, Mich. – The No. 6 University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team stepped out of conference play Sunday night to host No. 10 Stony Brook University in the opener of a two-game series at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.

UM-Dearborn clawed back after falling down 3-0 early but fell to the Sea Wolves 4-3. The loss drops the Wolverines to 16-5-1 overall on the season.

Stony Brook opened the scoring just 36 seconds into the game and led 3-0 at the end of the first. Nick Belger scored all three goals for the Sea Wolves, two on a five-minute power play midway through the opening frame.

The Wolverines bounced back in the second period as they slowly chipped away at the Stony Brook lead. Brendan West continued the hot start to his UM-Dearborn career, netting his fourth of the season, with John Ames getting the lone assist at the 1:21 mark of the second.

Silas Johnson inched the Wolverines closer as he added his ninth of the season with assists from Dawson Richard and Mathieu LaForest 11:32 into the second. Three minutes later, Anthony Davis tied the game at three as he buried a shot from the side of the goal for his ninth of the year with assists from Billy Brock and West.

The Sea Wolves responded with an unassisted goal at the 16:19 mark of the second by Ian Keller that put Stony Brook ahead for good.

Kaden Pickles got the start in goal for the Wolverines, making 29 saves.

The Wolverines close out the series against Stony Brook at 1 pm tomorrow at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.
