DEARBORN, Mich. – The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team scored seven times in the first period en route to a convincing win over Illinois State University Saturday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.
The Wolverines erupted in the first period on their way to a demanding 12-1 victory and a series sweep over the Red Birds. The fifth straight win improves UM-Dearborn to 6-1-0 on the season.
Billy Brock scored four goals for the Wolverines and got his night started just 47 seconds into the contest as the second-year forward gave UM-Dearborn a 1-0 lead. After Andrew Spiegel added two unassisted goals in a 4:21 span, Brock scored twice more in 59 seconds, giving him a hat-trick in the first period. The Wolverines kept the foot on the pedal as Michael Hodgson and Justin Dunn added goals before the first intermission.
In the second, John Barlow scored his first of the season after beating the goaltender to a loose puck in the offensive zone and putting it into the open net. The two teams would exchange goals, bringing the score to 9-1 through 40 minutes.
In the third, Brock added his fourth goal off a feed from Dunn, who added another goal just over four minutes later, followed by a goal from John Ames.
Brock's night ended with four goals and two assists, bringing his team-leading totals to six goals, 13 assists and 19 points in seven games.
UM-Dearborn outshot the Red Birds 72-20, as Thomas Proudlock made 19 saves in goal to improve to 5-1-0 on the season.
The Wolverines look to build on their five-game winning streak against the University of Utah at 7 pm next Saturday, Nov. 3 at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.
