Season ends for Wolverines in loss to No. 1 Beavers

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team gave No. 1 Minot State University all it could handle in the first period, but the Beavers pulled away in the second to top the No. 9 Wolverines 5-1 in the quarterfinals of the ACHA Division I Men's Ice Hockey National Championships Sunday at the Ice Haus in Columbus, Ohio.

The Wolverines got a goal from Tyler Groat (SO/Wyandotte, Mich.) to tie the game at 1-1 in the first period after UM-Dearborn had several chances to score in the frame. The Beavers took advantage of two Wolverine penalties in the second period, scoring two of their three goals in the period on the man advantage to build a 4-1 lead. MSU added an empty-net goal late to make it 5-1.

The Wolverines were outshot 36-31 as UM-Dearborn netminder Thomas Proudlock (SO/Southgate, Mich.) made 32 saves in the loss. Andrew Palushaj (JR/Livonia, Mich.) and Jeff McFarland (JR/Grosse Ile, Mich.) each picked up an assist on the Groat goal, his team-high 31st of the season.

Lyndon Lipinski scored three goals for a hat trick for the Beavers, who move on to the national semifinal against Central Oklahoma on Monday.

The Wolverines finish the season with a record of 24-8-1, the most wins under fourth-year had coach Chris Haltinner.
