Wolverines win fourth straight, complete sweep of EMU

DEARBORN, Mich. - The University of Michigan-Dearborn men's ice hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Eastern Michigan University with a second-straight blowout victory over the Eagles in a Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League contest Saturday at the the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.

The No. 14 Wolverines scored three in the first and three more in the third en route to a 7-1 win, moving UM-Dearborn to 8-5-1 overall and 4-4 in the GLCHL.

Much like the opener, the Wolverines got started early against the Eagles in the finale. Tyler Groat (SO/Wyandotte, Mich.) scored 25 seconds in and added his second just 13 seconds later to put the Wolverines up 2-0 in the opening minute. Jeff McFarland (JR/Grosse Ile, Mich.) and Andrew Palushaj (JR/Livonia, Mich.) assisted on both of the opening goals. McFarland added a goal midway through the first, while Andrew Spiegel (SO/Riverview, Mich.) scored his first of two in the second.

The Wolverines iced the game with three in the third, as goals came from Spiegel and Palushaj, while Groat completed the third UM-Dearborn hat trick of the weekend. The Eagles were outscored by the Wolverines 19-5 over the two-game series. T

he ice was tilted all game in favor of the Wolverines, as the team registered a season-high 69 shots on net, with EMU goalie Kevin O'Shea making 62 saves in the losing effort. Thomas Proudlock (SO/Southgate, Mich.) got the start in net for the Wolverines, stopping 21 of 22 shots faced in the win.

The Wolverines are off until after the holiday break when Oakland University comes to the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena for the opener of a GLCHL home-and-home series at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 6.
