Scoring outburst gives UM-Dearborn first GLCHL win

DEARBORN, Mich. - Played at home for the first time in three weeks, returning to play in the Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League in the first of two against Western Michigan University Friday at the UM-Dearborn Ice Arena.

The No. 13 Wolverines scored early and often against the Stallions en route to a 7-2 win, the first for UM-Dearborn in GLCHL play this season. The Wolverines are 5-5-1 overall and 1-4 in the GLCHL after the victory.

Gino Darin (SR/Allen Park Mich.) got the Wolverines on the board first with a wrist shot past the WMU netminder on assists from John Barlow (SO/Shelby Twp, Mich.) and Andrew Spiegel (SO/Riverview, Mich.). UM-Dearborn took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission after Kevin Bechard (SO/Trenton, Mich.) finished off a goal on a feed from Ryan Urso (JR/Livonia, Mich.) and Tyler Groat (SO/Wyandotte, Mich.).

The Wolverines picked up an early second-period goal from Justin Dunn (FR/Trenton, Mich.), with Groat and Andrew Palushaj (JR/Livonia, Mich.) each picking up assists. After WMU got on the board, Groat made a talented move to restore the three-goal UM-Dearborn lead. Urso, Bechard and Marcus McSweeney (JR/Chandler, Ariz.) each added a goal the rest of the way as the Wolverines dominated play down the stretch.

Thomas Proudluck picked up the win in net for the Wolverines, making 26 saves. UM-Dearborn recorded 36 shots as a team.

Game two of the weekend series between UM-Dearborn and WMU starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Dearborn.
