Groat and Urso Win GLCHL Awards

After a successful season including winning the GLCHL Tournament and earning a spot in the ACHA National Tournament, it comes as no surprise that two Michigan-Dearborn hockey players earned GLCHL honors. Sophomore defenseman Ryan Urso (SO/Livonia, MI) and freshman forward Tyler Groat (FR/Wyandotte, MI) were both named to the First Team All-League for the GLCHL. Urso was also named to the All-Defensive Team while Groat was named the Rookie of the Year for the GLCHL.

Urso, who was named to the GLCHL All-Rookie Team and All-Defensive Team last season, led Michigan-Dearborn defensemen with 35 points. Urso had 6 goals and 29 assists on the season. Urso helped an anchor a defense that allowed 2.61 goals per game this past season. Groat finished his freshman year with 25 goals and 12 assists in just 21 games. An injury cut his season short in January. He was averaging just over one goal per game and just under two points per game before his season ended.

The hockey team qualified for the ACHA National Tournament for the first time since 2006-07 and defeated Navy in the first round of the tournament before falling to the University of Central Oklahoma in the round of 16.
